Vatican News: Dear brothers and sisters, it is with profound sadness I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis,” Cardinal Kevin Farrell announced on the Vatican’s TV channel. “At 7:35 (0535 GMT) this morning the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father.”
It is with profound sorrow that the world mourns the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He departed this life in 2025, leaving behind a legacy defined by compassion, humility, and a steadfast commitment to social justice.
Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, made history as the first pope from the Americas and the first Jesuit pope. Elected to the papacy on March 13, 2013, he quickly became a beloved global figure, known for his modest lifestyle, approachable demeanor, and tireless advocacy for the poor and marginalized.
Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis championed causes such as environmental stewardship, interfaith dialogue, refugee rights, and the inclusion of LGBTQ+ individuals in the Church. His encyclical Laudato Si’ brought unprecedented focus to climate change within religious communities, and his emphasis on “a Church for the poor” redefined the Vatican’s modern mission.
A spiritual shepherd to over a billion Catholics, Pope Francis was equally admired by people of all faiths. He called for peace in times of war, bridge-building in times of division, and love in the face of hate. His leadership was marked by empathy and a deep understanding of the human condition.
He is survived by a grieving global community, countless faithful followers, and a Church forever shaped by his vision. Pope Francis’s impact will echo through generations, not only as a religious leader but as a global moral compass.
May he rest in the eternal peace he so often preached.
