Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, U.S. President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance and the Department of State’s Marco Rubio met at 11:00 AM February 28 2025.
Previous to that meeting, Lindsay Graham and Volodymyr Zelenskyy spent the morning together preparing for the meeting with Pres. Trump. Graham took Zelenskyy by the hand and told him how to obtain exactly what he needed.
Zelenskyy made it a point to say that he would not sign the natural resource agreement if it was tied to a cease fire. He was not going to sign a peace agreement.
Graham told Zelenskyy about the many reasons why Ukraine needed a cease fire peace deal — not more weapons but Zelenskyy wouldn’t commit. He assured Graham not to worry and told him he’d handle the meeting properly.
The meeting, held in the Oval Office, was intended to advance peace negotiations concerning the Russia-Ukraine conflict and to finalize a natural resources agreement but Zelenskyy had already told many that he would not sign a cease fire.
However, the encounter escalated into a heated confrontation because Zelenskyy had already said openly that he was not there to sign a cease fire and added that he wouldn’t sign the natural resources agreement if it included a peace deal because he’d signed those before with Putin and Putin never lived up to the deals. He said that Putin always broke the agreements.
President Trump accused President Zelenskyy of being “disrespectful” and ungrateful for U.S. support, suggesting that Ukraine’s actions risked global conflict. Vice President Vance joined in, criticizing Zelenskyy’s public discussions of policy and expressing frustration over Ukraine’s stance.
This exchange left many stunned, including Republican hawks, and led to calls from some GOP supporters for Zelenskyy’s resignation. Ukraine’s leaders were calling for Zelenskyy’s resignation as well.
European leaders who have never contributed any money to finance this war were quick to see Zelenskyy as an underdog because he’s warring with the larger Russia led by Vladimir Putin who is more seasoned.
The meeting concluded without the signing of the anticipated minerals deal, further complicating peace efforts in Eastern Europe and straining U.S.-Ukraine relations. The incident has had far-reaching consequences, prompting discussions about the future of international support for Ukraine and the potential implications for global security.
Like all reasonable people around the world, President Donald Trump also wants peace and was prepared to sign the natural resources agreement because he knows that he and Putin have a good history together.
Zelenskyy however, does not believe that Putin will keep his word simply because Trump is part of the deal.
Trump however has total confidence that Putin will live up to the letter of the law and keep his word if Trump is signing the agreement along with him.
