Minneapolis, MN – A 28-year-old Somali national residing in Minnesota has been federally charged in a series of horrifying kidnappings and rapes spanning nearly a decade, according to a recent Department of Justice press release. Abdimahat Bille Mohamed faces charges of kidnapping a minor and kidnapping, with allegations detailing brutal attacks on at least five victims between 2017 and 2025.
The charges stem from a federal complaint unsealed on December 4, 2025, outlining a pattern of predatory behavior where Mohamed allegedly used social media platforms like Snapchat and Instagram to lure victims before subjecting them to violent sexual assaults, often involving accomplices and firearms. If convicted, Mohamed could face a mandatory minimum of 20 years in prison, up to a life sentence.
Details of the Alleged Crimes
The complaint describes a chilling sequence of events:
- December 12, 2017 (Victim 1, 15-year-old girl): Mohamed and two accomplices kidnapped and raped the minor in Minneapolis after she connected with him on Snapchat. Under threat of a silver revolver, the victim was forced to perform sexual acts before being released. DNA evidence from a sexual assault exam matched Mohamed in 2024.
- February 7, 2018 (Victim 2, adult woman): Mohamed and two others raped the woman after luring her via Instagram. She was held against her will in a vehicle and assaulted, later escaping to a motel where police were alerted. DNA from discarded condoms linked Mohamed to the crime.
- May 8, 2018 (Victim 3, adult woman): In another Snapchat-related incident, Mohamed kidnapped the victim from St. Paul, drove her to Minneapolis, and raped her in an alley with an armed accomplice. DNA from her assault kit confirmed Mohamed’s involvement in 2024.
- May 30, 2024 (Victim 4, adult woman): Mohamed allegedly raped the woman in his Minneapolis apartment after picking her up under false pretenses. He threatened her with a gun, and police intervened after her sister called for help. Mohamed was arrested but released, displaying aggressive behavior toward officers.
- September 15-21, 2025 (Victim 5, adult woman): In the most recent case, Mohamed kidnapped the victim from Mankato, holding her captive in a Bloomington hotel for nearly a week. He raped her multiple times, including choking her, before she escaped and sought police assistance. DNA evidence again tied him to the assault.
These incidents highlight a consistent modus operandi, with Mohamed targeting women through social media, using vehicles for abductions, and employing threats of violence to ensure compliance.
Federal Intervention and Official Statements
The case has drawn sharp criticism from top Justice Department officials, who pointed to local policies in Minnesota as enabling factors. Attorney General Pamela Bondi stated, “This Somali national in Minnesota is charged with raping a minor and multiple adult women before being detained — only to be quickly released by a local court, after which he committed yet another rape. This horrific case illustrates how left-wing soft-on-crime policies and vetting failures put innocent people at dire risk. If Minnesota will not protect its own people, the Department of Justice will do it for them.”
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche echoed these sentiments: “The allegations are sickening — multiple kidnappings and rapes, including against minors — and they happened in a state that has chosen ideology over public safety. Minnesota’s radical soft-on-crime policies created an environment where predators believe they can act without consequence. President Trump was elected to restore law and order, and under Attorney General Bondi, this Department is making sure violent criminals like this will face real justice and spend the rest of their natural lives in federal prison.”
U.S. Attorney Daniel N. Rosen added, “Given the history of the state prosecution of Abdimahat Bille Mohamed, my office will aggressively prosecute this serial rapist.”
The investigation was led by the FBI, with support from Homeland Security Investigations, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, and several local police departments including Minneapolis, Roseville, Bloomington, St. Louis Park, Anoka County Sheriff’s Office, and St. Paul. Assistant U.S. Attorney Melinda A. Williams is prosecuting the case.
Mohamed is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The FBI encourages anyone with information on additional offenses to contact their tip line at 1-800-CALL-FBI.
This federal action underscores ongoing efforts to address violent crimes amid debates over criminal justice policies in Minnesota and beyond.
