FBI Releases Images and Evidence in Charlie Kirk Assassination Investigation
On September 11, 2025, the FBI released critical new details in the investigation into the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot on September 10, 2025, during a Turning Point USA rally at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. The 31-year-old founder of the influential organization was addressing a crowd of approximately 3,000 when a single gunshot struck him in the neck, leading to his death shortly after at a nearby hospital. Authorities have now shared surveillance images of a person of interest, along with forensic evidence, as they intensify their manhunt for the suspect.

The FBI’s Salt Lake City field office made public two surveillance images capturing a person of interest described as a white male, college-aged, and dressed in a long-sleeve black shirt featuring an American flag design, dark jeans, a dark-colored hat, and sunglasses. One image shows the individual ascending a set of stairs, while the other depicts him in a different area of the campus.
The attire matches descriptions of a figure seen on a rooftop near the crime scene moments after the shooting, leading investigators to believe this person may be connected to the crime. The FBI is urging the public to assist in identifying the individual, emphasizing the importance of any information, photos, or videos from the incident. A reward of up to $100,000 has been offered for information leading to the identification and arrest of those responsible.
Assistant Dean of Students at Middle Tennessee State University has been fired after publicly celebrating Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Laura Sosh-Lightsy, wrote “Charlie spoke his fate into existence. Hate begets hate. ZERO sympathy.”

In addition to the images, law enforcement recovered significant forensic evidence from the rooftop of a campus building, approximately 200 yards from where Kirk was speaking. A high-powered bolt-action rifle, believed to be the murder weapon, was found in a wooded area along the suspect’s escape route. Alongside the weapon, investigators discovered a footwear impression, a palm print, and forearm imprints, which are currently undergoing forensic analysis. These findings are critical, as they may provide unique identifiers to narrow down the suspect pool. Authorities also noted that ammunition recovered with the rifle bore engravings related to transgender and antifascist ideologies, though they have cautioned that this detail remains under investigation and should not be taken as conclusive evidence of motive.
The timeline of the suspect’s movements has been partially reconstructed. According to Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason, the suspect arrived on campus at 11:52 a.m. local time, accessed a rooftop via stairwells, and fired a single shot at approximately 12:20 p.m. After the shooting, the suspect fled by jumping off the building and escaping into a nearby neighborhood. Video footage captured a figure running across the rooftop moments after the shot, and enhanced analysis suggests the individual was approximately 140 yards from Kirk at the time of the attack. The suspect’s ability to blend in with the college-aged crowd has complicated the investigation, as no security checks were in place for attendees at the event.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Bohls described the shooting as a targeted attack, reassuring the public that there is no ongoing threat to the Orem community. However, the investigation has faced challenges, with initial reports of persons of interest being taken into custody and later released, and conflicting statements from officials, including FBI Director Kash Patel, who briefly announced a suspect was in custody before retracting the claim. Authorities have emphasized that the investigation remains fluid, and they are working around the clock with local and state agencies to follow leads. Over 130 tips have been received from the public, and the FBI continues to seek additional information through its tip line at 1-800-CALL-FBI.
The assassination has sparked widespread reaction. President Donald Trump announced that Kirk would be posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, calling him a “giant of his generation” and a “champion of liberty.” Trump also ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff through Sunday and expressed his intent to speak with Kirk’s family. Vice President JD Vance canceled a planned visit to a 9/11 memorial in New York to meet with Kirk’s family in Salt Lake City. Utah Governor Spencer Cox labeled the incident a “political assassination” and vowed that the perpetrator would face the full extent of the law, noting that the death penalty remains an option in Utah.
As the investigation unfolds, the FBI continues to appeal for public assistance, particularly from those who may have captured footage or witnessed suspicious activity on the Utah Valley University campus during the event. The release of the surveillance images and forensic evidence marks a significant step forward in the effort to bring justice for Charlie Kirk’s death.
