On Sunday, May 25, 2025, 18-year-old Ava Renee Moore was kayaking on Grapevine Lake, approximately 20 miles northwest of Dallas, Texas, when she was fatally struck by a jet ski.
The incident occurred around 5:20 p.m. near Oak Grove Park. Moore, a recent graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School and an appointee to the Air Force Academy’s Class of 2029, suffered severe traumatic injuries, particularly to her head, and was pronounced dead at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Grapevine at 5:59 p.m.

Witnesses reported that the jet ski, operated by Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez Gonzalez, a 21-year-old Venezuelan national in the United States illegally, was traveling at high speed and making reckless passes near the shoreline, endangering swimmers and kayakers. Moore and another kayaker had decided to paddle away from the area for safety when Gonzalez’s jet ski struck Moore’s kayak from behind, running over it.
After the collision, Gonzalez and her passenger, Clerismar Colina-Lugo, briefly returned to the scene, where bystanders attempted to detain them. However, Gonzalez fled with a male accomplice, Maikel Coello Perozo, in a blue Toyota Corolla.

While escaping, they committed a hit-and-run by striking another vehicle near the Cobblestone Apartments at Ruth Wall and Turner Road, then abandoned their car and fled on foot. On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, Gonzalez was arrested at a home in Oak Cliff, Dallas, following a coordinated effort by the Texas Attorney General’s Fugitive Apprehension Unit, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Grapevine Police, Dallas Police, Texas Department of Public Safety, and U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Perozo was also arrested, facing charges related to the vehicular hit-and-run.
Gonzalez faces charges of second-degree felony manslaughter, reckless operation and excessive speed, and leaving the scene of an accident involving death, with a recommended bond of $500,000. Perozo is charged with accident involving collision, with additional charges pending. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton noted that both suspects are undocumented immigrants from Venezuela, though this claim has sparked debate, as immigration status is not directly relevant to the criminal cha
Witnesses, including Lisa Scrabeck, confirmed Moore was wearing a life jacket, and CPR was attempted after she was pulled ashore, but her injuries were fatal. Scrabeck noted that Moore died instantly.
Moore was an accomplished student-athlete at Timber Creek High School in Fort Worth, known for her basketball prowess and leadership. She had just returned from Colorado Springs and was weeks away from starting Air Force basic training. Her family, devastated by the loss, launched a GoFundMe that raised over $22,000 for funeral costs. The U.S. Air Force Academy’s superintendent, Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind, described Moore as an exemplary teammate whose passion for service left a lasting impact.
