On September 10, 2025, a horrific workplace murder shocked East Dallas, Texas, when Chandra Mouli “Bob” Nagamallaiah, a 50-year-old Indian-origin motel manager, was brutally beheaded at the Downtown Suites motel.

The gruesome Dallas motel beheading occurred in the parking lot on the 3400 block of Samuell Boulevard, near Interstate 30, stemming from a heated argument over a broken washing machine. Nagamallaiah, a dedicated manager from Karnataka, India, who had worked at the motel for two to three years, was attacked by his co-worker, 37-year-old Yordanis Cobos-Martinez (an ill-tempered Cuban), in a rage-fueled assault witnessed by Nagamallaiah’s wife and 18-year-old son.

According to the Dallas Police Department’s arrest affidavit, the Dallas workplace violence incident began around 9:30 a.m. Nagamallaiah instructed a female employee to avoid using a malfunctioning washing machine, asking her to translate the message to Cobos-Martinez due to a possible language barrier.

This sparked fury in Cobos-Martinez, who retrieved a machete from his vehicle. Surveillance footage captured the chilling Texas motel murder: Cobos-Martinez stabbed and slashed Nagamallaiah multiple times as he fled toward the motel’s front office. Nagamallaiah’s wife and son, Gaurav, rushed out, with Gaurav striking Cobos-Martinez with a baseball bat to stop the attack. Undeterred, Cobos-Martinez pushed them aside, severed Nagamallaiah’s head, kicked it across the parking lot, stole the victim’s cell phone and key card, and discarded the head in a dumpster.

Cobos-Martinez, a Cuban national and undocumented immigrant per jail records, confessed to the brutal beheading murder during a police interview. Charged with capital murder, he remains in Dallas County Jail without bond on an immigration detainer. His prior criminal record includes arrests in Houston for auto theft, threats, and assault, which may influence the prosecution of this Dallas capital murder case. A conviction could lead to life imprisonment or the death penalty under Texas law.

Known as “Bob,” Nagamallaiah was a hardworking Indian-American motel manager with dreams of building a hospitality chain. Originally from Dharmavaram, Andhra Pradesh, he left behind his devastated wife and son, Gaurav, who plans to study hospitality management. The Indian-American community in Dallas has raised over $85,000 through a GoFundMe campaign to support funeral costs, living expenses, and Gaurav’s education following the tragic Texas workplace killing. Bob’s funeral was held on September 13, 2025, in Dallas.

The Dallas Police Department continues to investigate the motive behind this East Dallas motel tragedy, with the affidavit pointing to the translation dispute as the trigger. This senseless Indian immigrant murder has sparked discussions on workplace safety, immigrant vulnerabilities, and community violence in Texas, leaving the Indian diaspora grieving. The incident underscores the need for improved workplace conflict resolution and safety measures in the hospitality.
