CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — The Space Coast was rocked Thursday night when Blue Origin’s towering New Glenn rocket erupted into a catastrophic fireball during a late-night engine test, sending shockwaves across Central Florida and lighting up the sky for miles.
The explosion happened just after 9 p.m. at Launch Complex 36 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, where Jeff Bezos’ space company was conducting a critical “hotfire” test ahead of a planned satellite mission next week.
Witnesses described a deafening blast, shaking homes, rattling windows, and turning the Atlantic coastline orange.
“It felt like an earthquake,” said Cocoa Beach resident Amanda Keller, who watched the blast from her backyard. “The whole sky exploded. I honestly thought a bomb had gone off.”
Livestream cameras operated by NASASpaceflight.com captured the terrifying moment in real time. For several seconds, New Glenn’s seven BE-4 engines appeared to ignite normally. Then — without warning — the massive 321-foot rocket vanished inside an enormous ball of flame.
The explosion sent a mushrooming cloud of smoke and burning debris hundreds of feet into the air.
The fiery destruction was visible from beaches, highways, and neighborhoods throughout Brevard County. Drivers along A1A reportedly pulled over to watch the inferno unfolding over the Cape.
Blue Origin quickly confirmed what it called an “anomaly” during the test.
“We experienced an anomaly during today’s hotfire test,” the company posted on X. “All personnel have been accounted for.”
Miraculously, nobody was hurt.
Because static-fire tests are performed remotely, launch crews had already evacuated the immediate pad area before engine ignition. Emergency responders rushed to the scene within minutes while fire suppression systems poured water onto the shattered launch complex.
By midnight, flames were still flickering around portions of the heavily damaged pad.
The destroyed rocket — designated NG-4 — had been preparing for an ambitious mission to launch 48 Amazon Leo broadband satellites into orbit. The payload was part of Bezos’ growing effort to compete directly against Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite network.
The timing could hardly have been worse for Blue Origin.
Just days earlier, NASA announced that Blue Origin had been selected for major upcoming lunar cargo missions tied to America’s Artemis moon program. The New Glenn rocket was expected to play a central role in future moon landings and deep-space operations.
Now, industry analysts say the blast could delay the company for months — possibly longer.
“This is not just a rocket failure,” space analyst Eric Berger of Ars Technica wrote Thursday night. “This appears to be major launch pad destruction.”
Video replay analysis suggests the failure may have started near the base of the vehicle, close to the rocket’s engine section. Moments later, a secondary explosion appeared to rip upward through the body of the booster before the entire structure disappeared in flames.
The New Glenn rocket itself represented more than a decade of development and billions of dollars in investment by Bezos, who founded Blue Origin in 2000 with the goal of building reusable rockets capable of competing with SpaceX.
Standing nearly 30 stories tall, New Glenn was designed to become one of the most powerful rockets on Earth.
The company had already suffered a serious setback last month when another New Glenn mission failed to place a commercial satellite into the correct orbit. The Federal Aviation Administration had only recently cleared the vehicle to fly again.
Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp had celebrated the upcoming mission earlier this week, writing online: “Couldn’t be prouder to support the Leo team on this mission.”
Hours after the explosion, Bezos himself addressed the disaster.
“Very rough day,” Bezos posted on X. “But we’ll rebuild whatever needs rebuilding and get back to flying. It’s worth it.”
Even rival SpaceX founder Elon Musk weighed in shortly after the blast, posting a brief but telling message:
“Rockets are hard.”
Federal investigators are now expected to examine the wreckage and determine what triggered the catastrophic failure.
Meanwhile, stunned residents across Florida are still processing the unforgettable sight of a billion-dollar rocket exploding into a giant wall of fire over the Atlantic coast.
Developing story.
