Kenneth W. Mattson, a 63-year-old Sonoma real estate developer, was arrested in May 2025 and indicted on nine felony counts, including seven counts of wire fraud, one count of money laundering, and one count of obstruction of justice, for allegedly running a Ponzi scheme that defrauded nearly 200 investors, mostly retirees, out of at least $28 million to $46 million over 15 years. Operating through LeFever Mattson and KS Mattson Partners, he solicited investments for fake ownership stakes in real estate partnerships, using new investors’ money to pay earlier ones, while diverting funds for personal expenses.
Mattson pleaded not guilty during his first federal court appearance in San Francisco on May 23, 2025, and was ordered to remain in custody pending a detention hearing. Prosecutors allege he deleted thousands of files to obstruct an SEC investigation, and the scheme collapsed when he could no longer attract new investors. As of the latest reports, the case is ongoing, with potential penalties including up to 20 years in prison per count of wire fraud and obstruction, 10 years for money laundering, property forfeiture, and restitution if convicted.
