Early this morning at ~1:30 a.m., a man in his early 20s (described as a white male in some reports) from North Carolina unlawfully entered the secure perimeter at Mar-a-Lago’s north gate in Palm Beach, Florida.

He drove through the north gate of Mar-a-Lago’s secure perimeter as a guest vehicle was exiting, carrying a shotgun and a fuel/gas can. He was confronted by Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputy, dropped the can but raised the shotgun, and was fatally shot. He had been reported missing by his family days earlier.

He was carrying:

  • What appeared to be a shotgun
  • A fuel/gas can

Exact Sequence of Events (per Palm Beach County Sheriff Rick Bradshaw and Secret Service)

  1. The suspect drove through the north gate as another vehicle was exiting (effectively tailgating).
  2. Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputy immediately confronted him.
  3. He was ordered to drop the items.
  4. He set down the gas can, then raised the shotgun into a shooting position.
  5. Law enforcement (two Secret Service agents + one deputy) fired, fatally shooting him on site.

No Secret Service agents, deputy, bystanders, or any protected individuals were injured.

Key Background on the Suspect

  • Recently reported missing by his family in North Carolina.
  • Investigators believe he drove south from NC and acquired the shotgun along the way — the gun box was recovered in his vehicle.
  • No prior known law enforcement contact at this point.
  • Identity still not released (pending next-of-kin notification).
  • Motive unknown — FBI is building a psychological profile.

Official Response

  • FBI is the lead investigative agency.
  • Joint press briefing held this morning (~9:30 a.m.) with:
    • Palm Beach County Sheriff Rick Bradshaw
    • Secret Service
    • FBI Miami Special Agent in Charge Rafael Barros & Special Agent Brett Skiles
  • Sheriff Bradshaw quote: “He was ordered to drop those two pieces of equipment… At which time he put down the gas can, raised the shotgun to a shooting position… The agents and deputy fired their weapons to neutralize the threat.”
  • Bradshaw also noted they don’t yet know how many shots were fired or if the shotgun was loaded.
  • The two involved Secret Service agents are on routine administrative leave.
  • FBI is asking nearby residents to review home security camera footage from the area.

Important: President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were not at Mar-a-Lago — they were at the White House in Washington, D.C. No other protectees were present.

Photos of the shotgun and gas can recovered at the scene have been released/shared by investigators and are circulating.

This remains an active investigation. No further updates on motive or additional charges expected immediately.
