Karmelo Anthony Case: Conviction and New-Trial Ruling

Karmelo Anthony was prosecuted in connection with the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf during an April 2025 track meet in Frisco, Texas. Anthony maintained that he acted in self-defense. A jury subsequently convicted him of murder. The conviction is a jury finding, not merely a pending allegation.
What happened after the verdict
In August 2026, Anthony sought a new trial. His lawyers questioned how an understanding between trial counsel about excluding potentially prejudicial background evidence affected the presentation of the defense and Anthony’s decision whether to testify. Prosecutors opposed the request and maintained that the verdict was supported by the evidence admitted at trial.
Judge Michael Chitty denied the request for a new trial. The ruling left the murder conviction in place at that stage. A denial of a new-trial motion does not, by itself, establish that every avenue of appeal has been exhausted.
Evidence the jury did not hear
At the post-trial hearing, lawyers discussed prior conduct and communications concerning both Anthony and Metcalf that had not been presented to the murder jury. Such material should not be described as evidence jurors considered in reaching their verdict. Neither person’s unrelated past conduct, standing alone, decides whether the fatal use of force was legally justified.
Anthony did not testify at the original trial. The post-trial dispute concerned, in part, whether the lawyers’ handling of the proposed evidentiary understanding affected that decision. The court rejected the request for a new trial; the competing arguments remain distinct from the court’s ruling.
