Cocoa, FL — A peaceful early morning walk turned into a nightmare for Jodi Cowan, a 50-year-old resident of the Blue Bonnet Drive area near Cocoa in Brevard County. On Tuesday, May 19, 2026, shortly after 1 a.m., Cowan was mauled to death by two dogs believed to belong to a neighbor while walking her small dog.

Tragic Dog Attack Claims Life of 50-Year-Old Brevard County Woman in Cocoa Area

According to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) and accounts from her partner, Donnell Smith, the attack was brutal. Smith told reporters he witnessed the dogs dragging Cowan down the road. He rushed to intervene, using a knife in an attempt to fight off the animals and save her life, but the injuries were severe. Cowan was transported to a hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

Neighbors described the dogs — reported by some outlets as mixed-breed, possibly pit bulls — as aggressive and known to roam loose in the area. Security footage from a nearby home reportedly captured the horrifying moments leading up to the attack. Multiple residents had previously complained about the dogs, raising questions about prior reports to animal control and why the animals were not contained more effectively.

Smith, devastated by the loss, described finding his partner lying on the grass in a pool of blood. “It was brutal,” he said in interviews, noting he would never forget the image.

The BCSO’s Animal Services unit responded quickly and took the two dogs into custody. As of the latest reports, they remain with Brevard County Animal Services while the investigation continues. Authorities have not yet confirmed if criminal charges will be filed against the dogs’ owner.
