Founded in 2002 by husband-and-wife team Heather Alexander and Roy Alan, The Winter Park Playhouse has grown from a small startup theatre with folding chairs and a modest stage into one of Central Florida’s premier destinations for professional musical theatre. Heather Alexander serves as Executive Director and Artistic Director, while Roy Alan is the organization’s Music Director. Together, they have built a reputation for producing high-quality musicals, cabaret performances, and original programming that attracts audiences from across the region.
The renovation represents years of planning and collaboration among The Winter Park Playhouse, the City of Winter Park, and Orange County. The project was funded through an $8 million Orange County Tourist Development Tax grant, allowing the historic theatre to remain in its longtime home while significantly expanding its capabilities.
The revitalized theatre features numerous enhancements designed to improve the patron experience, including:
- Expanded seating capacity, increasing from 123 to approximately 172 seats
- A larger stage for more ambitious productions
- Comfortable Broadway-style theatre seating
- A dedicated cabaret performance space
- A welcoming new lobby
- Expanded restroom facilities
- Structural and accessibility improvements throughout the building
During the year-long renovation, the Playhouse temporarily relocated its productions to Orlando Shakes’ Mandell Theatre, ensuring audiences continued to enjoy its acclaimed performances while construction was underway. Now, the company is returning home just in time to launch its 2026–2027 season in its dramatically enhanced venue.
The sold-out Grand Opening Gala celebrates not only a beautifully renovated theatre but also the continued success of a nonprofit organization that has become an important cultural institution in Winter Park. The investment is expected to strengthen the Playhouse’s impact on the local arts community while generating continued economic benefits for the region through tourism, dining, and entertainment.
As the curtain rises on this new chapter, The Winter Park Playhouse remains committed to its original mission: presenting intimate, professional musical theatre productions that enrich the cultural life of Central Florida. With expanded performance spaces, modern amenities, and renewed energy, the Playhouse is well positioned to delight audiences for generations to come.
For longtime patrons and first-time visitors alike, the reopening represents more than the unveiling of a renovated building—it is the beginning of an exciting new era for one of Winter Park’s most treasured performing arts organizations.
