Sheila Jackson Lee, Long-Serving Congresswoman and Advocate for Civil Rights, Dies at 74

Sheila Jackson Lee, a dedicated public servant and fierce advocate for civil rights, passed away on July 19, 2024, at the age of 74. Born in Queens, New York, Sheila devoted her life to public service, representing Texas’ 18th Congressional District for nearly three decades.

Sheila’s career was marked by her relentless pursuit of justice and equality. She was a prominent member of the Congressional Black Caucus and played a pivotal role in the establishment of Juneteenth as a federal holiday in 2021. Her efforts to combat domestic violence through the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act and her advocacy for healthcare reform and disaster recovery were just a few highlights of her legislative accomplishments.

Known for her unwavering commitment to her constituents, Sheila was often seen on the ground in some of Houston’s most under-resourced communities, providing comfort and support to those in need. Her ability to secure federal funds for her district, including a notable $1 billion for Houston’s light rail system, showcased her dedication to improving the lives of her constituents.

Sheila’s legacy extends beyond her legislative achievements. She was a beloved figure in her community, known for her presence at local events and her tireless work to uplift those around her. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Elwyn Lee, and their two children. The family has requested privacy during this difficult time.
