Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his associate Rick Gates were reportedly told to surrender to federal authorities on charges including tax fraud as part of the special counsel’s investigation into Russian meddling and potential collusion with Trump campaign officials during the 2016 presidential election.

Manafort and Gates faced the first charges in the special counsel’s investigation.

Manafort reported to federal court in Washington, D.C.  The indictment is featured above.

Gates is a longtime associate of Manafort. According to the Times, his name appeared on documents linked to companies that Manafort’s firm created in Cyprus to receive payments from politicians and business people in Eastern Europe.

The special counsel’s office declined to comment to news media on the report.

White House lawyer Ty Cobb told members of the media that he had no comment on the report at this time.

It was widely speculated that Manafort would receive the first charges in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

Manafort has been investigated for his dealings in Ukraine several years ago, for which he negligently did not register as a foreign agent until June 2017.  This was no different than John Podesta’s brother Anthony whom did not register as a foreign agent until it was learned that the Podesta brothers were representing both Republican and Democratic politicians.

Top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said on ABC News’  “This Week” that the indictment could come for either Manafort, or former White House national security adviser Michael Flynn.

But House Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., said on “Fox News Sunday” that it was unclear who would be charged.

“We don’t know who’s being charged…  We don’t know what they are being charged for. We don’t know the time period,” Gowdy said Sunday, adding that “It’s kind of ironic that the people charged with investigating the law and executing the law would violate the law.”

Robert Mueller was in charge of the FBI when Vladmir Putin confirmed plans for Mueller to personally deliver samples of American uranium to Russia. This is a clear conflict of interest yet everyone continues to remain silent on the matter.
