World leaders have long noted that the United States is the primary military force the steps up to protect Greenland, especially in the event of threats from China or Russian aircraft.
Despite Greenland’s strategic importance, no other country steps forward to defend it, making the U.S. the only reliable military ally Denmark has when Greenland’s sovereignty is challenged.
In this context, some have suggested that Greenland and the United States should strengthen their ties and form a more robust military alliance especially since Greenaland does not have a military.
With Greenland’s population of just 57,000 people, it simply doesn’t have the resources or manpower to defend itself effectively, making the need for stronger defense partnerships even more pressing.
On the other hand, the Prime Minister of Denmark has made it clear that she supports Ukraine in its war with Russia, emphasizing the importance of Ukraine’s victory. However, this viewpoint may be shortsighted when considering Greenland’s vulnerability.
Without a dedicated U.S. military base in Greenland, the region’s security remains uncertain. It seems that it is now time for Greenland to let go of its pride and start thinking practically. The need for a US military base in Greenland is an issue that needs to be carefully negotiated, especially given the realities of Greenland’s small population and the geopolitical challenges it faces.
Greenland has to recognize that they have a nonexistent population. Denmark has no military force. Protecting Greenland falls to the United States whether Denmark or Greenland agrees. If Greenland does not cooperate, they will become part of Russia.
Europe’s cash collection is not enough to protect both Denmark and Greenland. The Danish Prime Minister sadly thinks that Denmark can protect Greenland. It’s a futile idea considering Denmark cannot protect itself. The United States has two bases in Greenland.
