COLOMBIA’S PRES RESPONDS WITH PRIDE NOT SENSE
BY SNN.BZ STAFF
Petro’s refusal to let U.S. military flights land in Colombia shows his stance on treating deported migrants humanely, which certainly touches on broader issues of immigration policy and human rights.
However, President Trump’s response with tariffs and visa restrictions reflects the strong pushback against actions that might be seen as hindering U.S. policy or security interests.
What’s interesting here is the clash between these two approaches: one that prioritizes migrant rights and dignity and the other that focuses on more restrictive measures aimed at controlling migration flows and maintaining security.
This could have significant ramifications not just in the U.S.-Colombia relationship, but also in broader international conversations around migration and human rights. For instance, FAFO is the acronym for FUCK AROUND AND FIND OUT.
On TruthSocial.com, President Trump issued the following statement:
I was just informed that two repatriation flights from the United States, with a large number of Illegal Criminals, were not allowed to land in Colombia. This order was given by Colombia’s Socialist President Gustavo Petro, who is already very unpopular amongst his people. Petro’s denial of these flights has jeopardized the National Security and Public Safety of the United States, so I have directed my Administration to immediately take the following urgent and decisive retaliatory measures:
-Emergency 25% tariffs on all goods coming into the United States. In one week, the 25% tariffs will be raised to 50%.
-A Travel Ban and immediate Visa Revocations on the Colombian Government Officials, and all Allies and Supporters.
-Visa Sanctions on all Party Members, Family Members, and Supporters of the Colombian Government.
-Enhanced Customs and Border Protection Inspections of all Colombian Nationals and Cargo on national security grounds.
-IEEPA Treasury, Banking and Financial Sanctions to be fully imposed.
These measures are just the beginning. We will not allow the Colombian Government to violate its legal obligations with regard to the acceptance and return of the Criminals they forced into the United States!
Do not ignore that it is his South of the Border Partner that helps him decide what will “be best” for Central and South American countries.
Unfortunately, Colombian President Gustavo Petro has responded to President Trump with a declaration of defiance, believing that other Central and South American countries will rally to Colombia’s defense. However, this assumption is misguided. Petro forgot that Colombia has no allies.
What President Petro fails to understand is that President Trump does not make idle threats; he makes promises. Trump has made it clear that he will impose all the tariffs and sanctions he has threatened against Colombia, and no other leader in Central or South America will interfere or come to Petro’s aid (none will risk taking part of any of this). Petro will find himself isolated.
President Trump will seize this opportunity to exploit the discord, using Colombia as a stark example of the consequences of defying Trump’s administration. He will follow through on his promises, demonstrating his resolve and the seriousness of his threat.
Petro was misguided when he went toe-to-toe with Trump. He allowed his macho pride to overrule his logic and common sense.
Central and South American leaders will stand idly by observing Colombia’s destruction and let it serve as an example of biting off more than one can chew. They will not join Petro and suffer the same sanctions and tariffs as have been announced for Colombia.
