Two residents of Katy, Texas, are currently incarcerated in Colorado, facing a total of 51 federal charges related to a mail theft operation.
Brevin Pogue, aged 27, and Dayana Amador Enamorado, aged 25, are each being held on $100 million cash bonds in Douglas County, Colorado. The charges against them include money laundering, motor vehicle theft, theft, and burglary.
According to court records, surveillance efforts by the Parker Police Department revealed that the defendants were observed emptying freestanding blue mailboxes outside several post offices and cluster boxes in the Denver area during a night in June.
In response to numerous complaints of mail theft, Parker police placed a tracker inside an envelope in one of the post office’s mailboxes and installed cameras to monitor the box. The tracker subsequently led to the apprehension of the suspects.
While mail theft might initially appear to be a minor offense, it is, in fact, a serious federal crime. Under United States law, specifically 18 U.S.C. § 1708, the theft or receipt of stolen mail is punishable by significant fines and imprisonment of up to five years per offense. This stringent legal framework underscores the gravity of mail theft, as it often involves the interception of sensitive personal information, financial documents, and other critical correspondence.
The federal classification of mail theft reflects its potential to facilitate broader criminal activities, such as identity theft, financial fraud, and other forms of organized crime.
