YOU HAVE TO WALK THE TALK
BY SNN.BZ STAFF
When a person with a history of drug and alcohol abuse, who has not participated in a recognized rehabilitation treatment program, attempts to position him or herself as a moral leader of the sobriety movement, that person may appear fraudulent to the public for several reasons and the public will certainly call out the hypocrisy.
Lack of Authentic Recovery Experience: Sobriety movements often emphasize the importance of undergoing a formal treatment program as part of a genuine recovery process. Treatment programs typically provide structured support and evidence-based methods that contribute to long-term sobriety. When someone who has not engaged in such programs tries to lead the movement, it always appears that they lack authentic, credible experiences with the recovery process (because they haven’t gone through it).
Public perception can be affected by the inconsistency between the individual’s past behaviors and their current role as a moral leader. If someone has not demonstrated a commitment to recovery through established means, their sudden shift to advocating for sobriety might be seen as insincere or opportunistic, rather than a genuine transformation.
Diplomatic and Financial Expectations
Diplomatic Status:
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle do not hold official diplomatic status in Colombia or elsewhere outside their roles as private citizens and former senior members of the British royal family. While they may have been treated with high regard due to their previous roles and the security measures they demanded, they don’t have formal diplomatic credentials of any kind from any country.
It’s common for high-profile individuals, especially those with royal connections, to request enhanced security during their travels. However, this request would typically be considered in the context of the hosting country’s capability and willingness to provide such protection. In this case, Harry, who is not an experienced diplomat, simply suggested that t
Security Costs and Reimbursement:
- Colombian Investment in Security: If the Colombian government provided significant security resources for Harry and Meghan during their visit, it was likely done in the interest of ensuring their safety and maintaining good relations. Whether these costs are reimbursed by the UK or US governments would depend on prior agreements or arrangements made before or during the visit.
- Precedent for Reimbursement: Generally, costs for security and other logistical arrangements for high-profile visitors are negotiated in advance. There might be agreements in place for such reimbursements, or it could be expected that the hosting country absorbs these costs as part of maintaining diplomatic relations.
Potential Outcomes
Negotiations and Agreements:
- Formal Agreements: If there was no formal agreement about who would cover the security costs, Colombia’s request for reimbursement would need to be negotiated with the UK and US governments. The governments would review the circumstances and decide whether to honor the request based on diplomatic considerations and precedents.
- Diplomatic Channels: The matter would likely be handled through diplomatic channels. The UK and US governments would assess the request and consider whether it aligns with standard practices for such high-profile visits.
Public and Private Responses:
- Public Reactions: The situation might receive public attention if it becomes a point of diplomatic contention. Media coverage could influence public perception of the responsibility and fairness in handling security-related costs.
- Private Negotiations: It’s also possible that discussions will take place behind closed doors to resolve the issue amicably without public scrutiny.
The expectation for reimbursement for security costs by the Colombian government would need to be assessed in the context of the agreements made and the diplomatic protocols involved. The outcome would hinge on negotiations between the Colombian government and the governments of the UK and US, considering the nature of the visit and prior arrangements made for security and other logistical support.
Questionable Authority: Leading a movement like sobriety often requires a deep understanding of the challenges and solutions related to addiction. If an individual has not undergone formal treatment, their authority on the subject may be questioned, as they might lack the comprehensive knowledge and skills gained through professional treatment programs.
Potential for Misleading Others: There is a risk that someone without formal treatment experience might inadvertently spread misinformation or unrealistic expectations about the recovery process. This could potentially harm individuals seeking effective help and undermine the credibility of the sobriety movement.
Skepticism About Motivations: The public might be skeptical about the motivations behind someone without treatment experience leading the sobriety movement. They may question whether the individual is genuinely committed to helping others or if they are seeking personal gain or attention.
Lack of Professional Endorsement: Formal treatment programs and professional endorsements lend credibility to leaders in the sobriety movement. Without this backing, an individual might be perceived as lacking legitimacy, which can affect their ability to be taken seriously by both professionals and those struggling with addiction.
As of the latest information, it is accurate that Prince Harry has not publicly disclosed details of participating in a formal addiction treatment program. While he has openly discussed his struggles with substance abuse and mental health challenges, most especially in his memoir Spare, he has not specified undergoing any particular formal recovery or addiction treatment program hence he doesn’t mention one.
Harry’s drug and alcohol condition remains untreated leaving him easily susceptible to relapse at any given time. It is on shakey ground that he has accepted the leadership role in BETTERUP as the CIO (Chief Impact Officer). He knows full well that he is not qualified and so does everyone else. We look forward to a time when he can talk the walk.
