Brian Steel protested to Judge Granville holding an ex parte meeting and raised hell about it.

During a recent legal proceeding in a Fulton County Georgia court, Judge Ural Glanville held an ex parte meeting without inviting the defense attorneys (which is wrong on its face if not illegal). In response, Brian Steel, representing a spirited individual known as “Woody,” voiced his protest, leading the judge to remand Steel to jail. The judge refused to recuse himself, said that he would not grant a mistrial and more or less continued justifying himself by denying all motions and remaining intransigent.

Ashleigh Merchant had to run to court on an emergency basis to defend Steel. Twenty five or more members of the Defense Attorneys Association showed up in force to show their displeasure that Steel was being remanded to jail due to the judge having lost his temper. Merchant addressed Judge Granville without emotion. She spoke factually, and calmly but was precise and clear in her demeanor. Judge Granville occasionally forgets that he is not in a JAG Military court, where his word is final.

Following this incident, the Judicial Qualifications Commission (JQC) – the body that oversees Judge’s behavior) and the Georgia Bar Association engaged in a conversation with Judge Glanville. They provided guidance, urging him to reconsider some of his retaliatory decisions involving attorneys and witnesses.
