BY THE LEGAL EAGLE
Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was tragically shot and killed outside the Hilton Hotel located on Avenue of the Americas and 54th street in Manhattan on December 4th. At the shooting location, police found three bullet casings each marked with a different word: DENY, DEPOSE, DEFEND is the title of a book about insurance companies not wanting to pay insurance claims so they delay, deny then defend.
NYPD Detectives have learned that the person of interest arrived in NYC last month at the Port Authority Bus Terminal on a Greyhound bus from Atlanta, Georgia arriving at Broadway and 47th Street to the bus depot. Weapons Specialists believe the gun used is known as a Station 6 gun.
Thompson, who had been with UnitedHealthcare since 2004 and served as CEO since 2021, was in New York for an investors’ conference. The attack occurred just before 6:45 a.m. as he was arriving at the Hilton Hotel in Midtown. The gunman, who was masked, shot Thompson in the chest and then fled the scene on a bicycle. The bike was last seen in Central Park and there seems to be a connection in Minnesota.
The incident has been described as a targeted attack, with the gunman apparently knowing exactly where Thompson would be. The New York Police Department (NYPD) has been actively investigating the case, offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the suspect’s capture. Authorities have learned that the killer shared a room with two other men in a youth hostel facility known as HI AMERICAN YOUTH HOSTELS located at 103rd Street and Amsterdam Avenue, NY.
Despite the use of drones, helicopters, and dogs in the search, the gunman remains at large. Surveillance footage captured the shooter approaching Thompson from behind and firing several shots before fleeing.
Thompson’s death has sent shockwaves through the business and healthcare communities. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz expressed his condolences, calling the tragedy a “terrible loss” for the community. Thompson was known for his dedication to his work and his family. He is survived by his wife, Paulette, and their two sons. Paulette described her husband as an incredibly loving and generous man who touched many lives.
The only question SNN.BZ staff are still questioning is that Paulette Thompson gave NBC news an interview where she explained that they had been receiving death threats. She said;
“There had been some threats. Basically, I don’t know, a lack of coverage? I don’t know details. I just know that he said there were some people that had been threatening him.” –Paulette Thompson to NBC News
When speaking to the Minnesota police department near her home, they said they knew nothing about death threats.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but investigators believe it was premeditated. The gunman used a weapon equipped with a silencer, which is rare in such attacks. The NYPD has released photos of a person of interest, hoping to gather more information from the public. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities piecing together the gunman’s movements before and after the shooting.
Thompson’s career at UnitedHealthcare was marked by significant achievements. He joined the company after spending over six years at PwC and quickly rose through the ranks. As CEO, he was known for his strategic vision and leadership, helping to steer the company through various challenges and opportunities. His sudden death has left a void in the organization and among those who knew him personally and professionally.
The healthcare industry has been particularly affected by this loss, as Thompson was a prominent figure in the field. His contributions to UnitedHealthcare and the broader healthcare community will be remembered and missed. The ongoing investigation aims to bring justice for Thompson and his family, as well as to understand the reasons behind this senseless act.
