TIGER WOODS: BACK IN THE ROUGH
Tiger’s drugs and alcohol have taken him way off course

There was a time when Tiger Woods seemed almost untouchable. He was not merely the best golfer in the world; he had transformed golf itself. The child prodigy introduced to the game by his father, Earl Woods, became a global sporting phenomenon, winning tournaments with an almost theatrical dominance.
But behind the carefully controlled public image was a private life that eventually exploded into public view. The story that followed would contain infidelity, divorce, physical injuries, prescription medications, rehabilitation, extraordinary athletic redemption and, eventually, another overturned automobile on a Florida road.
2006 — THE LOSS OF EARL WOODS
Any chronology of Tiger Woods’ personal decline has to acknowledge May 3, 2006, when his father, Earl Woods, died at age 74 after battling prostate cancer. Earl was considerably more than Tiger’s father. He had been his first golf instructor, mentor, disciplinarian and psychological coach. Tiger called him his “best friend and greatest role model” and said plainly that he would not have become the man or golfer he was without him.
It would be speculation to say Earl’s death caused everything that came afterward. But it is fair to observe that Tiger lost the man who had supplied structure, discipline and direction since childhood. In retrospect, Earl’s death became one of the great dividing lines in the Tiger Woods story: the father who had guided virtually every stage of his son’s extraordinary ascent was suddenly gone.
2009 — THE PERFECT IMAGE COLLAPSES
Then came Thanksgiving weekend 2009. Woods crashed his Cadillac Escalade outside his Florida home, striking a fire hydrant and tree. What initially appeared to be a peculiar one-car accident rapidly became something much larger. Reports emerged that Woods had been conducting extramarital relationships while married to Elin Nordegren.
The names began arriving almost faster than the public could keep track of them.
Contemporary reports linked Woods with Rachel Uchitel, Jaimee Grubbs, Kalika Moquin, Jamie Jungers, Cori Rist, Mindy Lawton and Holly Sampson. Other names subsequently reported in connection with the scandal included Joslyn James, Loredana Jolie, Julie Postle and Theresa Rogers, along with several women whose identities were never publicly established. Some women publicly described relationships with Woods; others denied the allegations or declined to comment. For that reason, they should not all be described as proven mistresses.
Jaimee Grubbs provided particularly damaging evidence, including what she said were hundreds of text messages and a voicemail in which a man she identified as Woods urgently asked her to remove her name from her voicemail greeting because his wife had apparently discovered his telephone. Mindy Lawton publicly described an alleged year-long relationship. Jamie Jungers and Cori Rist were also publicly linked to Woods, while Rachel Uchitel initially emphatically denied an affair.
Eventually Woods stopped trying to preserve the spotless image. He acknowledged infidelity and announced an indefinite break from professional golf, saying he needed to concentrate on becoming a better husband, father and person.
The marriage could not survive it. Woods and Elin Nordegren, whom he had married in 2004 and with whom he had daughter Sam and son Charlie, divorced in August 2010.
At Syndicated News, we made a prediction during those extraordinary days: the world would eventually forgive Tiger Woods.
The public might be shocked by the collection of women. Sponsors might flee. His marriage might end. His meticulously manufactured image might be destroyed. But we believed the public would eventually separate Tiger Woods the imperfect man from Tiger Woods the golfing magician. Time largely proved the prediction correct.
2010–2015 — TIGER BEGINS THE LONG CLIMB BACK
Woods returned to golf. The crowds returned too.
The scandal never disappeared from his biography, but it gradually stopped defining every headline. His personal life also moved forward. His most prominent post-divorce relationship was with Olympic skiing champion Lindsey Vonn. Woods publicly confirmed their relationship in March 2013. They remained together until 2015, when both announced an amicable separation.
After Vonn came stylist Kristin Smith, who was publicly linked with Woods during approximately 2016 and 2017. Woods later publicly clarified that the relationship had ended.
2017 — ANOTHER CAR, ANOTHER POLICE ENCOUNTER
Then came May 29, 2017.
Police found Woods asleep behind the wheel of his Mercedes near his Jupiter, Florida, home. His vehicle was running and damaged. Video of the confused superstar attempting field-sobriety exercises was painful to watch.
This was not an alcohol case. Woods registered 0.00 on the Breathalyzer.
But toxicology results subsequently showed hydrocodone/Vicodin, hydromorphone/Dilaudid, alprazolam/Xanax, zolpidem/Ambien and THC in his system. Woods said he had been attempting to manage severe back pain and insomnia and later acknowledged that trying to manage the medications himself had been a mistake. He entered treatment.
He eventually pleaded guilty to reckless driving and entered a diversion program. Woods would later explain that debilitating pain and sleeplessness had led him to over-medicate himself.
That distinction matters. Tiger Woods’ documented history unquestionably includes problems managing powerful prescription medications, but describing every subsequent incident simply as “alcohol and drug addiction” goes beyond what the evidence establishes.
2017–2022 — ERICA HERMAN AND THE GREAT COMEBACK
During this period Woods was involved with Erica Herman, who had managed his Florida restaurant, The Woods Jupiter. Their relationship became public in 2017 and lasted approximately five years. Herman was there during perhaps the greatest resurrection of Woods’ professional life.
And what a resurrection it was.
On April 14, 2019, Tiger Woods won the Masters.
Suddenly the enormous gallery at Augusta was roaring for him again. Millions who had watched his humiliation were watching his redemption. His children were there. Other golfers embraced him. The green jacket went back onto his shoulders.
The world had, for the most part, done exactly what we predicted years earlier.
It had forgiven Tiger Woods.
Not necessarily Tiger the husband. Not necessarily every decision Tiger the man had made. But sports fans welcomed back Tiger Woods the magician — the golfer capable of doing things with a club and ball that had once seemed almost supernatural.
2021 — A CRASH THAT NEARLY ENDED EVERYTHING
On February 23, 2021, another automobile almost ended the story permanently.
Woods suffered catastrophic leg injuries when his SUV left a road outside Los Angeles and rolled repeatedly. He required emergency surgery for open fractures in his lower right leg, with a rod inserted into his tibia and screws and pins placed in his foot and ankle. The injuries were so severe that Woods later discussed the possibility that his leg could have been amputated.
Yet once again, he came back.
Not as the dominant Tiger Woods of his youth, but as something perhaps more human: an aging champion carrying surgical scars, physical limitations and an increasingly complicated personal history.
2022–2025 — ANOTHER RELATIONSHIP ENDS, ANOTHER BEGINS
Woods’ relationship with Erica Herman ended around late 2022. Litigation followed concerning an NDA and her living arrangements at Woods’ residence. Herman ultimately dropped her litigation and later expressly stated that she had not accused Woods of sexual harassment or sexual assault.
Then another woman entered the public story.
In March 2025 Woods confirmed that he was romantically involved with Vanessa Trump, the former wife of Donald Trump Jr. Reports indicated that their friendship had developed through overlapping Florida family and golf circles, including their children’s involvement in competitive golf.
For a while, it appeared another chapter of Tiger’s turbulent personal life had settled down.
Then came March 27, 2026.
2026 — TIGER’S CAR IS ON ITS SIDE AGAIN
Woods was driving a Land Rover near his Jupiter Island home when authorities say he attempted to pass a slowing truck, clipped the vehicle or trailer and rolled his SUV onto its side.
Fortunately, nobody was killed or seriously injured.
Deputies reported observing signs they believed indicated impairment. Woods appeared lethargic and sweaty and reportedly had dilated pupils and bloodshot eyes. Officers found hydrocodone pills in his possession. But once again, alcohol was not detected on his breath test. Woods refused a urine test.
The arrest produced an eerie echo of 2017: Tiger Woods, automobile trouble, prescription pain medication and questions about impairment.
But the ultimate legal outcome requires an important qualification.
Prosecutors did not obtain a DUI conviction.
After examining Woods’ medical and prescription records and consulting toxicology evidence, prosecutors concluded they faced significant difficulty proving beyond a reasonable doubt that Woods had been unlawfully impaired. The DUI charge was therefore dropped as part of the resolution of the case.
SEPTEMBER 2, 2026 — BACK IN COURT
On Wednesday, September 2, Woods walked into the Martin County Courthouse in Stuart, Florida.
And walking with him was Vanessa Trump.
The court appearance shown in the Associated Press live video supplied for this story brought nearly two decades of Tiger Woods history into a single remarkable scene.
Woods entered a no-contest plea to reckless driving and refusal to submit to a lawful test. A no-contest plea is not an admission that the allegations are true, although it permits the court to enter a conviction. Woods received a five-year driver’s-license suspension and approximately $1,500 in fines. The original DUI charge was dismissed.
Judge Darren Steele made the consequences unmistakable: Woods is not to drive during the suspension. The five-year prohibition was imposed, the judge explained, for public safety.
There is something extraordinary about seeing Tiger Woods back in a courtroom after everything that has happened since 2009.
The women did not destroy him.
The divorce did not destroy him.
The humiliation did not destroy him.
Back surgery did not destroy him.
The 2017 arrest did not destroy him.
The 2021 rollover did not destroy him.
And the public did, indeed, forgive him.
But forgiveness cannot steer an automobile.
Tiger Woods remains one of the greatest golfers who ever lived — 15 major championships, 82 PGA Tour victories and one of the most remarkable sporting comebacks ever witnessed. Yet the recurring combination of serious physical pain, powerful medications and automobiles has become an undeniable and troubling part of his biography.
Perhaps the most revealing image from September 2026 wasn’t Tiger Woods standing before a judge.
It was Vanessa Trump walking beside him afterward.
After nearly twenty years of triumphs, scandals, women, surgeries, crashes, treatment and improbable comebacks, Tiger Woods once again walked out of a courthouse with another opportunity to rebuild.
The world has already demonstrated that it is willing to forgive Tiger Woods.
The question now is whether Tiger Woods can finally keep himself from needing that forgiveness again.
